Maple Sugaring and Climate Connections
At Messalonskee Middle School, Team Highlands students in Mrs. Ripa’s science class investigated global climate trends and freeze/thaw cycles through the study of maple sugaring. Students analyzed temperature data from locations such as Portland, Bangor, Jackman, and Quebec City to determine optimal tapping times. They also visited Bacon Maple Farm, where they experienced the process firsthand. Using their research, students created maple syrup business proposals and presented them in a team competition. Categories included best in show, most creative, most realistic, and best innovations for future climate challenges. The unit was supported by curriculum from the Gulf of Maine Research Institute and grant funding from the Maine Environmental Education Association. #WeAreRSU18
