Biomass Burner + Renewable Energy

Mrs. Ripa’s science classes recently walked to the Biomass Burner behind Messalonskee Middle School to tour the facility and learn more about renewable energy that heats our schools. The biomass burner heats water that then travels through underground pipes to Williams, MMS, and MHS. It heats our schools then loops back to the biomass burner to be warmed again. Students learned that a local company delivers about 56 tons of wood chips every week. They saw the conveyor system and the burning unit while it was running! They learned that this system burns very clean and saves our district money that could be spent on fossil fuels such as oil to heat our schools. Learners were excited to be able to see renewable energy used to heat our school and save our district money in the process. Thank you to Mr. Dan Casey for giving MMS students an opportunity to tour the system! #WeAreRSU18
