Team Kennebec Visits the Oakland Fire Department
Last Wednesday, Messalonskee Middle School students from Team Kennebec embarked on an educational field trip to the Oakland Fire Station. The visit provided an engaging and informative experience, allowing students to explore various aspects of firefighting and emergency response. Upon arrival, students were welcomed and began a comprehensive tour of the fire station. This tour offered insights into the daily operations of the fire department and the vital role firefighters play in the community. Students were particularly excited to participate in hands-on activities outside the station. They had the opportunity to try on the firefighters’ turnout gear, which gave them a sense of the protective clothing used in emergencies. Additionally, they engaged in a “Randy carry” exercise, simulating how firefighters rescue individuals in distress and participated in a hose relay, demonstrating teamwork and the physical demands of firefighting. Inside the firehouse, students had the unique chance to sit in an ambulance and learn about its life-saving equipment. An emergency room doctor conducted a CPR demonstration, teaching the students essential skills that could save lives in emergency situations. The tour also included a close look at the different types of fire trucks used by the department, with explanations of their specific functions and features. Overall, the field trip to the Oakland Fire Station was not only educational but also a memorable experience for the students of Team Kennebec, fostering a deeper appreciation for the bravery and dedication of firefighters in their community. #WeAreRSU18 #EaglePrideMMS
