Team Kennebec Visits the Oakland Fire Station
Recently the students of Team Kennebec of Messalonskee Middle School had the exciting opportunity to visit the Oakland Fire Station. This field trip allowed them to engage in a series of interactive activities, deepening their understanding of fire safety and emergency response. Upon arrival, the students were warmly greeted by Chief Coughlin and several dedicated staff members who generously volunteered their time to host the visit. The first station featured an informative tour of the ambulance, where students learned about its essential equipment and functions. They also participated in a hands-on CPR demonstration, practicing life saving techniques on both adult and baby mannequins. This valuable experience not only taught the importance of CPR but also helped students gain confidence in their ability to respond to emergencies. At the second station, students had the chance to try on the fire department’s turnout gear and collaborate in teams to carry a dummy on a board, simulating a real-life rescue scenario. The final station involved a thrilling water hose relay race! In this fast-paced challenge, students worked together—one running the nozzle, another carrying the hose, and a third controlling the water flow. The excitement peaked as teams raced to extend the hose and knock a tennis ball off a cone using the water stream. Overall, Team Kennebec students had an unforgettable experience exploring the fire station and gaining hands-on knowledge about fire equipment and emergency procedures. A heartfelt thank-you goes out to the Oakland Fire Department for hosting and providing such an enriching learning experience! #WeAreRSU18
